He’s trained to save lives. She’s about to steal his heart.

Former Air Force specialist Trent Chessner has built his career on tactical precision and emotional control. Then Isla Broussard crashes into his life—literally—and suddenly every rule he’s lived by goes out the window.

When Isla’s diabetic brother disappears into a cult compound, Trent knows the rescue mission could cost them everything. But watching this fierce Louisiana woman fight for her family awakens a protectiveness in him that has nothing to do with professional duty and everything to do with love.

As danger closes in and time runs out, Trent must choose between playing it safe and risking it all for the woman who’s made him want things he swore he’d never need.

He’s sworn to protect others. She’s about to teach him what’s really worth fighting for.

Early review for Rookie Guardian by Ella Braeme: "OBSESSED With This Romance Book"

Excerpt

“Maybe I want to carry some of that weight,” she said.

“No, you don’t.” The response came automatically, born from fifteen years of command experience. “You think you do, but you don’t understand what it would cost you. I’ve been making these kinds of decisions for years. I know how to live with them.”

As soon as the words left his mouth, Trent realized they were the wrong ones. Isla’s expression went completely neutral—the look someone wore when they were filing away important information.

“So you’ll just decide what I can handle?”

“I’ll protect you from having to make impossible choices.” He tried to soften his voice, to explain what he meant. “That’s what I’m here for.”

But instead of reassurance, he saw something crack in her expression. Something that looked like disappointment.

“I need to check on Ethan,” she said quietly.

Trent watched her walk to her brother’s door, noting the set of her shoulders, the way she didn’t look back at him. He’d said something wrong, but he wasn’t sure what. He’d been trying to explain how much he cared, how committed he was to protecting her from the kind of moral complexity that had kept him awake for years.

Instead, she looked like someone who’d just realized something unpleasant about the person she loved.

The murmur of voices came through Ethan’s door—Isla’s gentle, Ethan’s alternating between anger and exhaustion. Trent found himself straining to hear, but the words were too muffled to make out. He busied himself washing the dishes she’d abandoned, trying not to feel like an intruder in her small apartment.

Twenty minutes passed before she emerged, and when she did, her face was carefully composed in a way that made his chest tighten with unease.

“Everything okay?” he asked.

“Fine,” she said, but the word felt hollow.

She moved around the kitchen with mechanical efficiency, putting away the breakfast she’d never finished making. Trent dried the dishes and tried to think of something to say that might bridge whatever gap had opened between them.
